Why become a tutor?

Tutoring has long been accessed by pupils whose parents can afford it. This is an opportunity to provide tutoring for those whose parents cannot access it and who need it even more in terms of catching up with their peers.

The effectiveness of one-to-one tutors has been well-researched and, when done right, can boost progress by up to an additional five months of progress.

Tutoring as a job can be very rewarding; a chance to change a young person’s life for the better whilst earning some money for yourself.

You can fit it around other commitments in your life, it’s a chance to contribute positively to your community and it can provide you with experience for future employment if appropriate to you.

Why become a tutor with SPT?

We will provide you with the tutoring training you will require to be successful. Our access to national experts on Tackling Disadvantage, and Research Schools for evidence-informed strategies, means we can tailor course modules to fit your tutoring needs. We can help you find a tutoring placement, but we know that it doesn’t stop there. We intend to provide ongoing support to:

  • keep you up-to-speed with the changing needs of your tutoring placement
  • facilitate peer discussion so you can share great ideas and offer great solutions
  • guide you on the pastoral needs of your tutoring placement so that positive relationships are formed between tutor and pupil
  • maintain a great relationship between you and the class teacher so that learning is tailored to pupil’s needs – complementing work going on in school
  • grow your confidence, so that you can grow theirs.

How will it work?

We have designed three stages to take you through the process from initial interest and fact-finding, to focused training, and then onto ongoing support:

Stage 1

Initially, you will want to find out more information about how the SP Tutors tutoring programme will work. You will want to know that this is right for you, as much as we will want to know that you are right for our pupils. You do not have to have teaching experience or experience in a school, but there are some basic requirements that you will need to fulfil:

  • Right to work in the UK
    We need to check you have permission to work in the UK. There is a list of acceptable documents which need to be produced to confirm this.  
  • Be prepared to do an Enhanced DBS check
    As part of our responsibilities to safeguard children, we operate a Safer Recruitment Policy, which means that, to work with our pupils, you must have an enhanced DBS check. The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) makes background and criminal checks for those positions that involve caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults. An Enhanced DBS will show the following offences: sexual, violence, the supply of drugs and safeguarding.
  • Literate and numerate
    The NTP primary focus is help pupils catch up by addressing their barriers to learning. You will need to be articulate and able to explain mathematical concepts and/or English conventions (grammar, spelling, reading, writing, comprehension, oracy) to pupils with a range of abilities.
  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience
    We are looking for high-quality tutors. Ideally, you will have Qualified Teacher Status, or another education qualification. However, we know that there are many excellent Teaching Assistants who do not have such qualifications, and would make fantastic tutors. If you have neither experience, nor relevant qualifications we will invite you to interview when we can decide whether our tutor training programme will be sufficient for you to become a great tutor.
  • Committed and reliable
    You will want to know what time commitments there are for being a tutor and we will need to know that you can commit to the time required for the training and for completing a series of tutoring sessions. This is to ensure that each series of lessons can be completed with the pupil, whilst maintaining pupil-tutor-school relationships.
  • Personable – You will need to build new relationships quickly. Being able to communicate well with children and adults will be paramount. To be a successful tutor, not only will you need to engage pupils in every session, you will need to communicate effectively with the staff in schools for continuity of education and maximum impact for the pupils.

In July 2020, we hosted an ‘initial interest’ webinar. This was a two-hour, free online event that will give you sufficient information to decide whether tutoring with Schools Partnership Tutors is for you:

The webinar introduced a couple of our key advisors, Marc Rowland (Pupil Premium & Tackling Disadvantage expert) and Andy Samways, the Director of Unity Research School. We also had input from a Head Teacher giving their perspective on the NTP and SP Tutors, and primary Maths advisor, Anna Tapper regarding expectations and strategies.
